DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — As powerful Hurricane Helene nears landfall in Florida Thursday afternoon, several school districts in central North Carolina have adjusted their Friday schedules as the storm's impacts are already being felt in many parts of the Southeast.
Some districts, like Cumberland County Schools, are moving to an "asynchronous" remote learning day Friday for students.
"During this time, students will work independently on assignments provided by their teachers," a Cumberland County Schools release said. "Students enrolled in classes at Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville Technical Community College and College connections should contact their instructors for specific guidance regarding class schedules."
Cumberland County said all after-school activities such as athletic events are canceled.
Others, like Durham Public Schools, will be closed for all students and staff "out of an abundance of caution" due to the weather conditions.
"Friday will not be a remote learning day," the district said. "Athletic events scheduled for Friday evening will be rescheduled."
Here's the list of schools and their plans for Friday. Most districts also have their Friday after school events postponed or cancelled. It will be updated as more districts announce their schedules.
