Flash flood warning issued for Wake County with up to 5 inches of rain, weather service says

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- A flash flood warning was issued for Wake County Tuesday evening after up to five inches of rain are possible later this evening, the National Weather Service said.

The warning was issued just before 6:20 p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. for all of Wake County, the weather service said.

"Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have fallen in Raleigh and the surrounding areas," the National Weather Service said in the warning. "Additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are possible in the warned area."

The warning said that there is "life-threatening" flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

Towns and cities included in the warning are Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest, Garner, Fuquay-Varina, Zebulon, Apex, Holly Springs, Morrisville, Knightdale, Wendell, Rolesville, and Purnell, officials said.

The warning area also includes RDU International Airport, William B. Umstead State Park, Purnell, and Falls Lake State Recreation Area.

"Slow down and use caution while driving to avoid hydroplaning. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads," the warning said.
