RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Snow is coming down across the Triangle and surrounding areas as the third winter storm of the season makes its way through North Carolina on Wednesday.

The CBS 17 Storm Team declared Wednesday as an Alert Day as confidence grew for a high-impact winter system.

Snow was caught on camera in the Clayton area, coming down as small flurries. There are also reports of light snow falling in parts of Wake and Johnston counties, according to CBS 17 Meteorologist Laura Smith.

Flurries as they began in Holly Springs, NC around 12 p.m. Wednesday.

Unlike the last systems, which primarily brought precipitation late at night, this storm is slated to arrive during the day, bringing a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that will cause hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages southeast.

Snow and sleet will begin accumulating by lunchtime, picking up into the afternoon before tapering off by 7 p.m. Wednesday. Roads will become hazardous and slippery across the area.

The best chance for heavy snow will be near the Virginia border where up to 6 inches will be possible. Snow and sleet totals will drop off drastically south, with totals between 1-3 inches in the Triangle, and less than an inch near the Sandhills and southern Coastal Plain. Accumulating ice could reach up to .25 inches in eastern North Carolina from Cumberland, Sampson, and Wayne counties.

The majority of central North Carolina is under a winter storm warning until 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.
