RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - After a warm and breezy Saturday, a strong cold front has swept across central North Carolina, ushering in sharply colder temperatures for Sunday.
Afternoon highs will struggle to reach the upper 40s to low 50s, significantly cooler than the near 80-degree temperatures to start the weekend.

Despite the cooler conditions, fire danger remains elevated across the region due to very low humidity levels and dry ground conditions. Residents should remain cautious with outdoor activities that could spark fires.

Clear skies Sunday night will allow temperatures to plummet into the 20s, likely resulting in one of the last hard freezes this season.
Looking ahead, temperatures will gradually rise early in the week, peaking around 70 degrees by Wednesday. However, a strong cold front will bring the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms on Wednesday. Stay tuned for additional info on the severe risk when we get closer to next week.

Cooler and calmer conditions return Thursday and Friday, with highs back in the 50s.
