RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — This Thursday night into Friday morning, the moon will begin turning into a coppery red color in a total lunar eclipse, creating a spectacle in the sky.

According to NASA, the "blood moon" — the nickname for the event — will have the best views across North and South America. NASA said Saturday that parts of Africa and Europe may catch a glimpse.

But will we be able to see this in the Triangle?

If the skies are clear — which may be partly cloudy, according to our CBS 17 Storm Team — the Triangle will be able to see the entire event of the total eclipse. According to Time and Date AS, an additional resource used by The Associated Press, the Earth will begin covering the moon around 11:57 p.m. Thursday, where the moon will start to turn a copper-red color around 2:26 a.m. early Friday morning.

The best time in Raleigh to view the blood moon in its maximum form is projected to be at 2:58 a.m. Friday, according to Time and Date. They estimate the event will end around 6 a.m.

The last time a total lunar eclipse was visible in Raleigh was November 6, 2022. CBS 17 previously reported that it was the first total lunar eclipse to occur on Election Day as we know it in the U.S. and something that won’t happen again until 2394.
