RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The final weekend of winter will bring another batch of spring storms ahead of a strong cold front Sunday.

The storms could produce heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and even an isolated tornado. The CBS 17 Storm Team has declared Sunday an Alert Day due to the impacts of these storms. Please stay weather aware Sunday as the storms move through.

It will not be a total washout this weekend as Saturday will be a mostly dry day with warmer and windy weather expected. Saturday’s high will reach back up to 80°, but it will come with windy conditions gusting above 20 miles per hour.

Sunday is our Alert Day, but it will also not be a washout. The timing of the line of storms will likely be in the afternoon and evening. The line of storms will impact all of central North Carolina.

Heavy rain is likely ahead of the cold front moving through, but we will also see widespread windy conditions. Gusts could approach 40 mph Sunday, even outside of the line of storms.

When the line of storms moves through, we could see even stronger winds gusting above 50 to 60 mph. There is also a threat of isolated tornadoes.

The cold front will pass after the storms Sunday night and leave us drier and cooler Monday to start the new work and school week.

Stay with the CBS 17 Storm Team for updates leading up to the severe weather risk this Sunday in central North Carolina.
