National Hurricane Center eyeing two areas for potential tropical development

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The National Hurricane Center is watching two areas in the Gulf of Mexico for possible tropical development.

A broad area of low pressure has been moving across Florida, producing torrential rainfall in south-central Florida.

The low will then move off the southeast United States coast, possibly bringing rain and rougher waters to the southeast. While some weather impacts are expected, tropical development is not looking likely at this point. Odds for development are 20% within the next 48 hours as well as within the next week.

Models are in better agreement with the track of this low pressure, and fortunately it is away from North Carolina, in the open waters off the coast. (And remember, those model lines only tell us the track of the system, not the strength.)

A second area is being monitored for possible tropical development. An area of low pressure is expected to develop in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, and once that low develops it has odds of development up to 30% within the next week (but development is not expected within the next 48 hours.) Whatever forms, it is not expected to impact North Carolina.

A reminder: it's early in the hurricane season, so it's not uncommon to have very little activity within the first few months. Peak hurricane season is September 10th, and season runs through the end of November. If anything develops, the CBS 17 Storm Team will keep you updated!

The Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1. It runs through the end of November.
