RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Staying inside is the best way to beat the sweltering heat according to the Wake County EMS, but the extra demand on AC units could lead to break downs when you need it the most.
Keeping HVAC repairmen like Yousef Abdylrheem with Michael and Son HVAC busy this season.
“Like yesterday, I had nine jobs for one day," Abdylrheem explained. "Last week I was working for seven days. No stop, just keep working, working, working.”
Abdylrheem says the cause of many of the breakdowns they see are from a lack of AC unit maintenance checks. Whenever people turn down their thermostats below 68 when the temperature is above 90 degrees outside the system can become overworked and break from pre-existing issues.
"Before the summer is coming, we will fix the problem," Abdylrheem said.
Experts recommend getting your unit checked before the hot months in April and May. Then again, in August and September before the weather starts to cool down.
“Its so hot, its way too hot, and way to humid,” Raleigh resident, Dorthy Joel said.
Another way to maintain your unit is replacing your air filter regularly.
Joel says her cousins know what happens if you don't all to well.
“They didn’t change their filter for awhile so the AC wasn’t working properly and there was a back up or something like that and they had to call the technician,” Joel said.
Experts recommend changing your filter every three months and if you have pets every month.
“Change your filter, first thing, make the maintenance, make sure that your system is working fine every year," Abdylrheem said. "Don’t keep your system with no service for like three to five years because when it gets warm outside, if your system has problems, we will find your problem when its 95 degrees outside.”
Even though the hotter months are here, Abdylrheem says its not too late to get your unit checked out.
