Rainfall totals of 2024 off to highest start since 1939 in the Triangle

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — After a pretty dry start to 2024, the last three months have been anything but.

Since July, the RDU Airport has gotten nearly 30 inches of rain. We're likely to break the 10-inch mark in September by the end of this week, thanks to whatever is left of Hurricane Helene moving our way.

In fact, even after being in a drought early this summer, 2024 is checking in as the wettest start to a year in Raleigh since 1939, the 8th wettest all time (dating back to 1887).

I think it goes without saying that we could use a dry stretch, especially as the sun angle gets lower and water less efficiently evaporates out of the ground/off of other surfaces.

The craziest stat of them all is this one: through Sept. 23, the 45.42" year-to-date rainfall figure is less than an inch under the average annual rainfall in Raleigh; 46.07". By the end of the week, we'll break that threshold, with three months left in 2024.

With all of this rain, do we think we have a greater chance of seeing snow this winter? It's been nearly three years since the last flakes flew in the Triangle!
