LIST: Central NC schools closed Wednesday due to winter weather threat

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As bitterly cold temperatures and potential snow make their way to central North Carolina on Tuesday evening, many school districts across the region are already planning ahead.

Several schools announced closures, remote learning, or delays for Wednesday with looming winter weather on the horizon.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for multiple counties throughout our viewing area, while a cold weather advisory has been in effect since Monday evening.

Chances of accumulating snow have increased, causing roads to become dangerous Tuesday night into Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to be as low as 20 degrees with the wind chills in the single digits.

The following public schools are impacted for Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22:

  • Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools will be closed on Wednesday. Optional remote workday for staff.
  • Cumberland County Schools will be closed for students with employees working remotely Wednesday. All afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Clinton City Schools will be closed for students and operate on an optional workday for staff Wednesday. Any afterschool activities scheduled for Tuesday are required to conclude no later than 5 p.m.
  • Durham Public Schools will be closed for students Wednesday. For staff, Wednesday will be an optional workday.
  • Edgecombe County Public Schools will hold a remote learning day for students Wednesday.
  • Harnett County Schools will hold a remote learning day for all students and employees Wednesday. All afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Hoke County Schools will hold a remote learning day for all students and employees Wednesday. All afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Johnston County Schools will hold a remote learning day for students Wednesday. All afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday.
  • Lee County Schools will hold a remote learning day for all students and staff members Wednesday. All afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday.
  • Moore County Schools will be closed on Wednesday. Employees may report to work on a two-hour delay.
  • Sampson County Schools will operate on a remote schedule for all students and staff Wednesday.
  • Wake County Public Schools System will be closed on Wednesday. No make-up day will be required.
  • Warren County Schools will be closed on Wednesday after previously announcing a delay.
  • Wayne County Public Schools will be closed for all students and staff Wednesday. All afterschool programs are canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Wilson County Schools will be closed for all students and staff Wednesday. All afterschool activities and athletic events are canceled for Wednesday.

The following colleges and private schools are impacted for Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22:

  • North Carolina State University will cancel all classes from Tuesday at 5 p.m. through Wednesday at noon.
  • Southpoint Academy will be closed for students Wednesday.
