RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Monday, the National Hurricane Center released a special tropical weather outlook, outlining the first area to watch in the Atlantic in 2025.
Per NHC, "A non-tropical area of low pressure located about 700 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands is producing gale-force winds and a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
"Additional development of this low is not expected as it moves northward to northwestward into an environment of strong upper-level winds and dry air tonight and Tuesday."
The NHC gives the system a low chance, 10%, of development over the next week.
This is a special tropical weather outlook because twice daily outlooks from the NHC are on hiatus between Dec. 1 and May 15. On May 15, usual, twice-daily Atlantic basin outlooks will be issued again through the upcoming season.
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1. If this system were to achieve subtropical storm status, it would have the name Andrea.

The only name that was retired after 2019 was Dorian, replaced by Dexter.
