RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – We are getting a first look at predictions for the upcoming 2025 Atlantic basin hurricane season.

On Thursday, Colorado State University released its extended range forecast for hurricane activity and landfall strike probability, predicting an above-average season with 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes that could impact the continental U.S. and the Caribbean.

According to the report released, "current La Nina conditions are likely to transition to ENSO neutral conditions in the next couple of months; however there remains considerable uncertainty as to what the phase of ENSO will be this summer and fall."

Researchers at CSU say it appears that sea surface temperatures across the eastern and central Atlantic are warmer than average, but not as warm as they were at the same time last year.

The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season begins on June 1.

People are reminded to begin preparing for the upcoming season.
