RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Monday is a CBS 17 Storm Team Alert Day due to an increasing threat for strong to severe storms and the potential for localized flash flooding across central North Carolina. A level 1 and 2 severe risk is in place through the evening.

Threat of Damaging Winds, Flooding Monday

The best chance for severe weather will be from late morning through the afternoon, with additional storms and heavy rain possible into the evening hours. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for areas mainly along and east of I-95 through 10 p.m. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are right for the development of severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, as well as isolated tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of central North Carolina under a Level 1 (Marginal) and Level 2 (Slight) Risk for severe storms on Monday. Areas along and east of U.S. 1 will have the best chance of seeing an isolated strong to severe storm through 7 p.m. locally, but a few lingering severe storms could stick around for as late as 10 p.m. just to our east.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few strong to severe storms could produce damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and heavy rain. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out, though the threat is low.

Heavy Rainfall and Flash Flooding Possible

Rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts up to 3 inches possible where storms repeatedly track over the same areas.

This could lead to flooding in poor drainage spots and localized flash flooding in urban areas, especially during the afternoon and evening.

The WPC has issued a Level 1 risk for flash flooding across all of Central North Carolina.
