RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The National Weather Service in Raleigh issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of central North Carolina on Monday afternoon.

Around 5:26 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties. This warning will be in effect until 6:30 p.m.

Additionally, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued until 9 p.m. for much of central North Carolina.

The Storm Prediction Center added a 2 out of 5 risk area of severe weather to portions of the region, prompting a CBS 17 Storm Team Alert Day for Monday.

This is a hail risk-driven 2 out of 5 threat level, in what is an unusual setup for severe weather in our backyard.

A nearby, nearly stationary cold front has cooled the upper levels of the atmosphere, which is increasing the risk for large hail throughout the afternoon and evening.

The highest risk for quarter-size or larger hail will be in our northeastern counties, where the Level 2/5 risk area was added at 9 a.m. A gusty wind report or two is also possible, but the primary concerns are about hail on Monday.

The cold front will finally make its way through central N.C. overnight Monday into Tuesday, bringing quieter weather for the next few days.
