(WSPA/WNCN) - Did you feel it? An earthquake originating in east Tennessee early Saturday morning was felt by residents in North Carolina — and as far away as Atlanta.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake was reported at around 9:21 a.m. Saturday just south of Knoxville in Greenback. The earthquake was strong enough to be felt, but not likely to cause much damage.

According to tools provided by USGS, including reports from residents, shaking from the earthquake could be felt for miles away.

Multiple visitors to the USGS website have reported shaking across western North Carolina and down into parts of Upstate South Carolina.

Authorities in western NC caution residents to only call 911 in case of emergency and use tools from the USGS for safety. Here is what the Jackson County Emergency Management Office advised in a social media post below:

  • Expect aftershocks hours, days, or weeks after the main quake.
  • Aftershocks can cause building damage and falling debris that could injure you.
  • Avoid open flames in damaged buildings.
  • Earthquakes can damage gas lines, so don’t use lighters or matches.

Reports of shakes have also come in from as far north as the border of Tennessee and Kentucky and as far south as Atlanta.
