April 18 marked latest snow in spring in the Triangle 41 years ago; now the snow drought continues over 800 days
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — After yet another day topping out in the 80s this week, it's hard to imagine us talking about snow. And yet, here we are! A few decades ago, we weren't talking about persistent heat, but about flying flakes.
Back in 1983, almost two inches of snow fell at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. That's the latest measurable snow in the season ever in the Triangle.

Meanwhile, we've only been adding the numbers on this graphic.

We're at over 800 days in a row without measurable snow.
That's still good enough for third all time on the snowless streak, slowly creeping up to the record set back in the 20th century. So, the million dollar question is, when would we break that record from 1989?

If we subtract our streak now from the current record and add one day (because we're thinking about breaking the record, not tying it), that puts us at 356 days; just about a full year.

That exact date is April 8 next year. Will we make it through next winter snow-free? There's plenty of time to try to figure that one out.
